Weekly Parent BulletinWeek of 30 June (Week B)

~ 30th June 2025 ~

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our Weekly Parent Bulletin. Please see below for our weekly update of all things NFS. You will find some lovely success stories and a few useful updates.

Today we said goodbye to all our Year 13s (Leavers' Day). They had a wonderful assembly with Mr Cleveley, their tutors and teachers. The students were so thrilled to be spending time with the staff that have looked after them for many years. Thanks to all these staff for their wonderful care and support. We hope all the Year 13 students have a lovely summer and look forward to seeing them on Results Day in August.

A reminder that Friday is Culture Day at Nottingham Free School. Please refer to the email sent by Mrs Inglis and Mrs Wilken. We are all super excited for this special day in our school.

Thanks as always for your continued support of our school.

Yours faithfully,

Dr J Simpson

This is an opportunity to see all the work that our GCSE and A level students have done this year. Some samples of KS3 work will also be chosen to go on display and children will be notified about this closer to the time.

There will be drama performances from our KS4 drama students for you to attend too, as well as some music performances.

As usual we will also be running a refreshments stall to raise money for our Art department so any donations of cakes for the evening would be very much appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Y8 students using Mechanical Guidance in PE. An introduction to Batting in Rounders, where students use a Batting Tee to remove the variables that come from inconsistent Bowling (as students have only just learned how to Bowl). This allows students to practise technique without having to negotiate variations in height/pace/spin.

Attendance

  • To support students to attend every day for the final 20 days, we are starting a new challenge for the whole school.  The year group with the best attendance each week will earn a Step into School each Monday.  This means that students can choose what footwear they want to wear.  This has been a huge success this year with students striving to wear their own footwear. The parents/carers of the winning year will receive an email on the Friday to make them aware of the Monday reward.
  • As parents/carers, please can you ensure that your child attends every day for the final 20 days of this academic year.  When we talk to students some are already nervous about moving up a year group in September and what that means for them.  Any further absences in these final 20 days will cause:
  • Missed learning opportunities
  • Preparation for September - opportunities to know what they will be taught
  • As always, a reminder of when you should be sending your child into school on the days your child is not feeling 100% and how you support them:
What will be counted as an unauthorised absence? What can be done to help in this situation?
Colds, coughs, headaches, nausea, hay fever, sore throats, migraines, period pains, cold sores or conjunctivitis

Please check the NHS guidance: "Is my child too ill for school?"

Let school know your child is feeling ill so we can monitor them in school, if the illness is minor.

Please give them doses of recommended medicine before school, for mild illnesses.

If your child has been diagnosed with migraines by your GP, please let school know.

If your child feels unwell in school, they should report to Student Reception and a trained First Aider can support them (children must never use their phones to contact parents to say they need picking up).
No communication at all from a parent or carer

Parents and carers have a duty to call in and explain their child’s absence.

For family emergencies, please ensure you contact us about your situation and we will offer support.

Unevidenced medical appointments (doctors, dentist, etc.) Ask for a letter/email to confirm your child’s appointment. You can send in a screenshot of appointment confirmations.
Holidays Please always book holidays during the school holidays only.
Feeling tired after a weekend sports fixture or other extracurricular event Inform the school that your child is tired. We can monitor and support in school.

Physical injuries that could be catered for in school

If your child has a physical injury, contact school for support on how they can attend.
Your child refuses to attend school

Call our Attendance Officer immediately and we can offer support.

If your child is experiencing friendship issues, or is worried about a past incident, send them to school and let us know. We can best support your child when they are in school.

Head lice and nits Please treat your child’s hair with a medical shampoo and call school to let us know.
Low mood or anxiety

Call our Attendance Officer immediately and we can offer support.

If your GP, or other medical professional, has expressed concerns about your child’s mental health please contact school for support
Sunburn Please apply appropriate after-sun cream and give doses of appropriate medicine. Contact us if you need further support.
Unevidenced and unagreed sporting/musical activities

All external sporting/music activities must be evidenced and agreed by the head/deputy head.

Contact school as soon as you know dates for these activities.
More than one day for religious observance

Children are granted 1 day for religious observance.

Further absences would be unauthorised.

Ethos of Excellence

  • We have noticed that some students are not arriving ready for school on a regular basis.
  • Please ensure they have a pencil case with the correct equipment in and that they are wearing the correct uniform.
  • By students not arriving with a pencil case or correct uniform it increases anxiety for them as they are not allowed to attend lessons until they are ready.
  • Please check your child's equipment the weekend to ensure they are meeting the requirements (https://www.nottinghamfreeschool.co.uk/page.php?p=uniform
