Brilliant Books

We all know that books are brilliant – all staff and students read at NFS on a daily basis – but nowhere is this more obvious than during one of our weekly enrichment activities. During ‘Brilliant Books’, a group of year 7 pupils are visited by a different guest each week who talks to them about their career and why reading is important to them on a personal and professional level. Guests recently have included local MP Chris Leslie, ex-professional footballer Tony Lormor and Dr Paul Beardsley, a principal research scientist from Disney’s research laboratories in Zurich.

In addition to reading and discussing books, the students also write in a variety of forms and styles; ultimately, their work will be published in an anthology of writing, allowing them to develop their creativity and literacy skills. All of this is managed through the guidance of local writers and is funded through the National Lottery. As one student in the group said, “It helps me think about what I want to do in the future and how important books are in getting me there.”
